In the fall of 2003 Ben and Michael Rathbone were on their way to  the Agricultural
Center to do a few songs for the North Carolina Mountain State fair. They had been
introduced to two young brothers named Cliff and Matt Wright. Both of the boys were
playing fiddle when Ben and Michael met them at Mrs. Hyatt's Jam on Brevard road. Matt
had just started playing the upright (doghouse) bass. They thought it would be an experience
for the boys to play for the  crowd. It was a match.
The name of the group came about simple enough, Ben thought it would be him and Michael
playing and when Ben was asked over the phone what the name of the group was, he said half
jokingly, "just put down 'The Hominy Valley Boys'".
Ben Rathbone left the group in 2007 to spend more time with his kids and wife Wendy. The
group was pleased when Ronnie West volunteered to help out on guitar and bass vocals. "I'll
help you out till you can find a real guitar player", Ronnie said. He's been with the group
ever since.
Around the same time a young man asked if he could sing a song at the "pickin' in the park"
celebration in downtown Canton. Michael was helping out with a band that was on stage at
the time. The young man said he didn't know what chord the song was in, but that he would
just do it without music, if that was okay. It was very okay. The voice was incredible. After
very little coaxing Justin Trull was the newest member of the Hominy Valley Boys. In 2010
Justin left the group to serve the lord in a music ministry.
From that simple beginning The Hominy Valley Boys have been on the same stage as  IIIrd
Tyme Out, Dr. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, Lonesome River Band, Balsam
Range and many others. The Boys love to perform and to entertain.
